In a heartfelt celebration filled with gratitude, memories, and community pride, the Perry County Board of Education officially dedicated the Francis Marion Gymnasium to longtime coach and mentor Coach Woodie J. Jackson on January 30, 2026. The ceremony recognized not only an outstanding athletic career, but also a legacy of leadership, discipline, and unwavering commitment to generations of students.
Perry County Board of Education members — Dr. Vera Davis, Chairperson; Mrs. Cheryl Thomas, Vice-Chairperson; Rev. Eulas Kirtdoll; Mr. Donald Nichols; Superintendent Marcia Smiley — along with family members, former athletes, colleagues, and community leaders gathered to honor a coach whose influence has extended far beyond wins and championships. Known for fostering character, Coach Jackson has spent more than 40 years shaping young people into confident leaders both on and off the court.
During the ceremony, speakers shared stories reflecting Coach Jackson’s dedication — from late evening practices to encouraging halftime talks. Former athletes also credited him with helping them succeed not only in sports, but also in academics and personal growth.
Coach Woodie J. Jackson’s résumé is remarkable. He led teams to six state championships, including four consecutive titles from 1988–1991. At just 24 years old, he earned his first state championship, becoming the youngest coach in Alabama history to do so. His career also includes two years coaching at Dillard University in New Orleans and 11 Final Four appearances, among many other accomplishments.
The newly dedicated gymnasium stands as a permanent tribute to his impact. Adorned with school colors and championship banners, the space will serve as a daily reminder of excellence, perseverance, and community spirit.
Principal Demetrice Jackson, son of Coach Jackson, noted, “This dedication ensures that future generations will know the standard of integrity and passion Coach Jackson set for all of us. His legacy will live on every time a student steps onto this floor.”
As the ribbon was cut and applause filled the air, Coach Jackson expressed heartfelt appreciation to the students, families, and colleagues who have been part of his journey. With the naming of the Woodie J. Jackson Sports Arena, the Perry County School District celebrates more than a coach — it celebrates a lifelong commitment to shaping character, building community, and inspiring excellence for generations to come.
